Healthy baby boy delivered along I-5 in North Seattle

SEATTLE — A woman gave birth in a vehicle on the side of I-5 in Seattle when she and the baby’s father were unable to make it to the hospital on time.

The birth occurred during the Friday morning commute, possibly along the southbound I-5 express lanes in North Seattle.  The couple then made it to a Mercer Street off ramp, where they were met by medics.

Both the northbound and southbound ramps were blocked as medics responded.

The scene was cleared and the mother, baby and father were on the way to the hospital around 7 a.m.

The baby boy's father delivered him six weeks early.

The Washington State Department of Transportation said the baby boy is healthy and fine.
