Buildings damaged, 217 killed following large earthquake in Mexico City

MEXICO CITY — A magnitude 7.1 earthquake caused buildings to sway and break apart in Mexico City on the anniversary of the magnitude 8.0 quake that did major damage in 1985.

The death toll in the quake that struck 90 miles southeast of Mexico City is at 217 as of Wednesday morning.

Pictures fell from walls, objects were shaken off of flat surfaces and computer monitors toppled over.

There are reports that at least 44 buildings have collapsed.

In some areas, authorities have spray painted the word "silence" to keep the search areas quiet, so they can listen for trapped survivors.

Among the most devastating scenes is a school that came crashing down, killing at least 21 children and 4 teachers.

Despite the rising death toll, there have been some miraculous stories of survivors.

Twenty survivors were pulled from a building, but 40 others are believed to still be inside.

Family members are gathering to scour lists of names to see if they're loved ones have been accounted for.

The next 24 hours is critical in the effort to find survivors.
