Deputies: Armed carjacking suspect in custody after fleeing, holding elderly man at gunpoint

GRAHAM, Wash. — A suspected carjacker led Pierce County sheriff’s deputies on a high speed chase before taking a hostage then refusing to surrender.

SWAT team members surrounded the home in Graham after investigators said the abandoned the car he had stolen at gunpoint and ran on foot, breaking into the home of a 91-year-old man.

“[He] took the resident, an elderly man hostage at gunpoint. We’ve since extracted the resident, he’s out safe with us,” said Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Detective Ed Troyer.

Stan Tekmenzhi's home surveillance video camera caught the end of the chase not far from the standoff.

“I just see this red car smash into my driveway and just start heading past our house. And then I see a cop car two seconds behind that,” Tekmenzhi said.

When the suspect refused to surrender the SWAT team finally stormed the home using tear gas and flash bang grenades. Investigators say the 30-year-old man will face a number of charges.

“Kidnapping, auto theft, first-degree assault, burglary or a resident, there will probably be more by the time we’re done,” Troyer said.
