FedEx is standing behind a driver who stopped protesters from burning an American flags in Iowa City.
Driver Matt Uhrin rushed into a group of protesters who were burning American flags on the Iowa City pedestrian mall in front of the Old Capitol and tried to extinguish the flames, sparking a confrontation, the Iowa City Press-Citizen reported Thursday.
His actions were viewed tens of thousands of times on the Internet this weekend, and on Saturday morning FedEx tweeted support.
“We have reviewed the matter in Iowa City involving driver Matt Uhrin,” the tweet said. “He remains a FedEx employee & we have no plans to change his status.”
Organizers told the Iowa City Press-Enterprise that Thursday's demonstration across from the Old Capitol Mall was aimed at racial and social injustice and U.S. imperialism. When they burned flags, Uhruin grabbed a fire extinguisher and took action.
