Fire destroys warehouse at South Park Marina

SEATTLE — Crews from four fire departments fought a two-alarm warehouse fire in Seattle’s South Park neighborhood.

Firefighters were called to the building in the 8600 block of Dallas Avenue South at 2:18 a.m. Thursday.

The warehouse at the South Park Marina along the Duwamish River is used to service boats.

“It’s kind of a complicated scene. We have a total of 13 boats that were damaged in what we believe at this time was an accidental blaze. In addition, we had structures on either side and a shop in between, so a total of three structures,” King County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Tim Meyer said.

Inside the warehouse, several boats made of fiberglass helped fuel the flames over the course of a few hours. As the flames were knocked down, they would flare up again once another boat ignited.

The roof and walls collapsed and the building is a total loss, according to fire officials.

“Our boats are like an extension of ourselves, and our hearts go out to all of those who had their boats here looking forward to a long Labor Day weekend on the water. Those hopes are dashed for this weekend,” said Meyer.

Crews from Seattle, Tukwila, Puget Sound and King County Fire District 2 responded. The Seattle Fire Department’s fireboat was also used to get the flames under control.

Fire officials said one person who was working in the building when the fire started was hurt and was taken to Harborview Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
