THURSTON COUNTY, Wash. — Firefighters saved two dogs Wednesday from a Thurston County house fire.
The dogs, Zip and Faith, are trained by their owners to use the bathroom and close the bathroom door behind them.
"Although humorous on the average day, this action alone bought them the time necessary for West Thurston Fire’s firefighters to use their skills and special oxygen mask to save the lives of these pets," fire officials wrote Thursday.
When a fire broke out at the house, Faith followed Zip's "instinct" to retreat into the bathroom, where they shut the door and got into the bathtub together.
The dogs’ owners were away for the day, fire officials said. A neighbor called for help, and when firefighters arrived, they were able to contain the fire to one room.
As they continued searching, they found Zip and Faith huddled together in the tub, unconscious.
The dogs were taken outside and rescue breaths were performed on them, while they were cooled down and treated.
Both dogs are now breathing on their own and recovering, officials with West Thurston Fire said.
"We are trained to save people and the pets that people love," Captain Christiansen with West Thurston Fire said.
