Hundreds help raise money for Special Olympics at Polar Plunge

Participants took to the cold waters at Alki Beach in West Seattle to raise money at the 2020 Seattle Polar Plunge for Special Olympics Washington.

More than 500 people participated in the event Saturday morning, raising nearly $200,000. Many dressed up in costumes before jumping into the water.

People who were looking to raise more money or take on a bigger challenge, participated on Friday in the Super Plungers, in which participants took a dip every 30 minutes for 10 hours.

Kaiser Permanente representatives were there handing out hot chocolate, gloves and special fleece blankets for plungers.

The Seattle Polar Plunge is one of five plunges through mid-March benefiting more than 19,500 Special Olympics athletes in Washington.

The Special Olympics of Washington is a nonprofit, which provides year-round sports training and athletic competitions for children and adults with disabilities.

Athletes will compete in a variety of sports, from Alpine skiing to soccer and swimming.
