A long-standing Civil War reenactment at a Renton middle school is now in jeopardy after some parents complained that it was racist and sexist.
Parents say the reenactment has been part of the curriculum for eighth-graders at Maywood Middle School for 20 years. As part of the project, kids are split into two teams to represent the North and the South.
They're assigned a historical figure from the war, whom they research. They compete for points while learning about the war, and the project culminates with a game of capture the flag.
Many students are upset and have created an online petition to save the reenactment.
The school district says a final decision has not yet been made.
