Police search for suspect after sexual assault on UW campus

SEATTLE — Police at the University of Washington are investigating after receiving a report about a sexual assault on campus.

The incident happened Monday at about 3:30 p.m. in a residence hall on the northeast area of the campus.

Emma Sun, a freshman student, lives in one of the residence halls on hat side of campus. She was notified about the sexual assault through a campus-wide email released Wednesday afternoon.

"We just need to be aware of this one and be careful," she said. "It's kind of scary for us, we need to be aware of people."

Police said the victim didn’t realize the suspect was behind when she opened the door to her room.

The man followed her into the
room, where the assault took place.

Freshman student Katya Deakins got a call from her mother asking about the sexual assault.

"That's just so random, you wouldn't expect that to happen," she said.

The victim said she did not know her attacker. It's possible he may be another college student.

To Deakins, 
it's a reminder to be careful.

“It’s a scary thing,” she said. “I’m a girl so that’s a real thought for me.”

The suspect is described as being in his late teens to early 20s, about 6-feet-1 inch-tall, medium build with a thin mustache. He was wearing a hoodie and sunglasses.
The suspect remains at large.
