String of license plate thefts in South Everett

EVERETT, Wash. — Thieves have been targeting a south Everett neighborhood where they have been stealing rear license plates from cars parked in driveways overnight.

“They took the plate protector and the screws because they weren’t on the ground,” said Mark Osborne, who was one of several who say their license plates have been stolen.

“Definitely frustrating, I’m out the money, and what’s to say they won’t come back.”

Police said most likely the plates are put on stolen vehicles to cover up other crimes.

The pricey car tabs also have value.

It cost Osborne two hours and $32 to report the theft and get new plates, which he is now keeping inside the car just to be safe.

KIRO 7 went in search of a better solution for Osborne and anyone else dealing with plate theft in their neighborhoods.

Keith Wolford at a nearby AutoZone was helpful.

He showed KIRO 7 a number of anti-theft bolts for license plates.

They cannot be removed with standard screwdrivers, which will thwart most thieves.

KIRO 7 bought some of the security screws and put them on the rear license plate of an SUV.

The install was a little tricky, but 10 minutes later the job was done.

Wolford said his crew started using the security bolts for their company vehicles after an incident two weeks ago.

“Our delivery vehicle just had its plates stolen,” Wolford said.
