Two teens hurt in South Park crash

SEATTLE — Firefighters had to cut open a car to rescue two teenage boys in South Park Tuesday morning.

Police confirmed the driver was 16 years old and the passenger was 13 years old. Witnesses told KIRO 7 they heard the driver apologizing to the passenger, who he said was his little brother.

The car slammed into a tree at South Cloverdale Street and 12th Avenue South around 2:15 a.m.

The passenger was freed from the vehicle after firefighters worked for 25 minutes.  It took firefighters 55 minutes to extricate the driver from the wreck.

The victims were both transported to Harborview. The driver is in critical condition and the passenger is in stable condition.

It is not yet known if alcohol or speed were factors in the crash.

South Cloverdale Street was blocked for hours.
