Wet, windy weather Monday; pockets of snow falls in some areas

Pierce/Kitsap County line on the Key Peninsula

  • Warming into Monday
  • Snow possible before turning to rain
  • Wet and windy weather

It is windy and wet Monday morning with pockets of snow for a lot of the area. The heavier snow has been in the South Sound so far, but even Seattle has had some wet snow mixed in. This will continue with the heavier precipitation this morning but we're slowly warming up thanks to those gusty south winds.  In fact, most areas are above freezing now and we'll continue to warm up.  Don't be surprised if you have snow for the first few hours this morning before it all turns to rain and then even tapers off this afternoon.  Highs will warm into the mid-40s.

A Wind Advisory is in effect until 10 a.m. Monday for the North Coast, North Interior, Hood Canal area, and Everett area.  Winds of 20 to 30 mph are expected with gusts up to 45 mph.  Outside the advisory area, we’ll have slightly weaker winds, but it will still be pretty gusty with winds likely peaking early Monday morning through the commute.  The wind will stay gusty, but calm down quite a bit this afternoon.

Snow will be heavy at times in the mountains.  A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the Cascades until Tuesday morning.  We should pick up 3-10" today and another 5-10" Monday.

Rain in the lowlands should be ending by about mid-day or at least pausing.  We’ll see another round swing in from the southwest tonight with southerly winds picking up again.  It looks like the bulk of the rain will fall overnight with blustery showers continuing on Tuesday.

Wednesday looks mainly dry for now, but with another system expected Thursday, we’ll have to watch the timing.  Thursday’s rain turns to showers on Friday with highs likely in the mid 40s.

As for the weekend, models are  VERY inconsistent.  It looks like we could see a bit of a cool-down, along with a low-end chance of showers.  Cold enough for Christmas snow?  I’m not ruling it out completely, but I’m also not very optimistic about the chances.
