SPANAWAY, Wash. — A Pierce County deputy died while on patrol in the Parkland-Spanaway area Tuesday.
At 6:16 a.m., a passerby called 911 to report that a deputy was found unresponsive on the ground in a parking lot behind a Pizza Hut off Pacific Ave. S.
Deputies and medics gave the deputy CPR and he was taken to a nearby hospital.
Shortly after 7 a.m., the Sheriff’s Department was notified that the deputy had died from what appeared to be a medical emergency.
The deputy is Daryl Shuey, who served the department as a deputy sheriff since 1994. He was 57.
A department spokesman said Shuey was a husband and father, and a beloved member of the department. He worked dayshift central patrol and had just started his shift when the incident occurred.
