Suspected package thieves caught thanks to home video

AUBURN, Wash. — Police say two wanted criminals are behind bars thanks to the images captured by a homeowner's surveillance system.

The video shows a woman stealing packages last week.

The homeowner printed out fliers with an image of her face and the truck she drove up in. The flier read "Reward: Auburn Package Thieves."

On Friday, an Auburn police detective spotted the truck.

"The people that were in that particular truck took off running," said Cmdr. Steve Stocker with Auburn police.

Investigators say stolen packages and mail could be seen inside the truck.

"They could see what looked like a large quantity, a pretty good quantity of other stolen items, of packages," said Stocker.

Police think the truck was stolen just so the thieves could use it to steal mail.

"They get fake ID's and they get credit cards, and they get checks; one of the females had an ID that really looked like her," said Stocker.

Auburn police say the arrest happened because the victim was able to pass along these images to police.

"There's really not much that that female is gonna be able to say about whether or not she's the one who committed that crime or not," said Stocker.

Police are still building a case against the driver and the woman, so they're not releasing names.

But they say the driver of the truck has been arrested 12 times in Auburn in just the last year.
