During his Fox News show Monday night host Tucker Carlson praised President Donald Trump's ability to stare at the sun without protective eyewear during the eclipse.

"In a move that is not a complete surprise, he looked at the sun without any glasses," Carlson said. "Perhaps the most impressive thing any president has ever done."

Carlson said in a statement Tuesday that he was joking, and that his statement on Tuesday was "a test to see if liberals are really as slow and humorless as people claim. Turns out they are."

Carlson has a long-standing history of praising Trump. He was criticized for qualifying Trump's controversial remarks in the days following a white supremacist protest in Charlottesville, Virginia, earlier this month.

He also has occasionally disagreed with the president however. In July, he denounced Trump's criticism of Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Carlson formerly hosted MSNBC's "Tucker" and co hosted CNN's "Crossfire". His show "Tucker Carlson Tonight" recently replaced "The O'Reilly Factor" as Fox News Channel's no.1 prime time show.
