Weekend Anchor, Investigative Reporter

I’m Eric Thomas, a Weekend Anchor and Investigative Reporter for KIRO 7 News. You can catch me on the anchor desk on Saturdays and Sundays. And, I’ll be out in the community reporting the most important stories throughout the week. 7 Questions: Where did you grow up? I was born and raised in Atlanta, GA. But, I’ve since lived all over: Columbia, MO (Mizzou); Tampa, FL; Chicago, IL; Montreal, QC; and most recently Toronto, ON. Why did you become a journalist? As a 2nd generation journalist, I’d have to say primarily because of my dad. He was also an anchor and reporter for close to five decades, giving me a unique first-hand insight into the industry, as well as an understanding of what it means to be a professional in this business. The newsroom is my sanctuary. I also have an innate love for storytelling and sifting through the details. What cities have you worked in during your journalism career? I was fortunate enough to work in both television and radio in Montreal right out of college. After a few years in La Belle Province, I made my way to Toronto to cover sports at the national level, which was my most recent stop before arriving at KIRO 7. What’s the most memorable story you’ve ever covered? Attending Muhammad Ali’s funeral was a pivotal moment in my career. It wasn’t just a sports story, or even news for that matter. With all the history and impact, it felt more like a cultural moment. It’s an experience I will never forget. I was also lucky enough to cover the Seahawks’ Super Bowl XLVIII victory in New York City. The atmosphere was incredible, and from that opening play (the safety), it was apparent Seattle was going to have a special night. What are you most proud of in your career in news? My continuity, consistency, and work ethic, as well as the ability to adjust on the fly. If a kid from Atlanta can cover hockey in Montreal, anything is possible. What’s something people don’t know about you? I love thrill rides, but I’m deathly afraid of heights. In other words, I have no problem hopping on a roller coaster, and I’ll happily visit the top of the Space Needle. However, it’s highly unlikely you’ll ever catch me enjoying the glass floor, skydiving, or bungee jumping anytime soon. What do you like to do when you’re not working? I love to travel and experience new cultures. I’m always down to visit a modern art museum. I also enjoy mixing/making my own music and heading to the movies (especially an empty matinee showing). And, I’ll watch any sport under the sun. Baseball is my first love, but in the fall, college football can easily consume an entire Saturday.
