Sprint 5G service will launch in these cities first
The nation’s #4 wireless carrier says it will bring 5G service to the following U.S. cities in the first half of 2019:
- Chicago
- Atlanta
- Dallas
- Kansas City
- Houston
- Los Angeles
- New York City
- Phoenix
- Washington D.C.
While different metros will have different coverage areas, Sprint says it expects NYC to be blanketed by 5G signal for “nearly 30 square miles covering Midtown and lower Manhattan.”
The greater Dallas Fort Worth area will get approximately 230 square miles of Sprint 5G coverage.
Meanwhile, Sprint says true 5G service is currently up and running in downtown Chicago, from the Magnificent Mile and the Loop to University of Illinois at Chicago, with more testing and optimization now underway.
“Real 5G is now on-air in Chicago, marking a major milestone for the commercialization of Sprint 5G using 2.5 GHz and Massive MIMO to provide fast speeds and true mobility,” Sprint CTO Dr. John Saw says.
All told, Sprint 5G coverage will have an initial footprint of 1,000+ square miles across the nine cities.
Clark’s take on 5G
Clark Howard says will be a "game-changer."
The money expert notes that it will bring changes to the way you watch streaming TV, the monopoly structure of how we do high-speed Internet in this country and what you pay for home Internet/TV service, among other things.
“If you do something on your phone [with 5G], it will load quicker than your eye can register that the screen has changed,” Clark promises.
