1. Young filmmakers. Children’s Film Festival Seattle. Northwest Film Forum and Rainier Arts Center. Feb. 27-March 8. Since 2005, the CFFS has become the largest film festival dedicated to young filmmakers on the West Coast. Children ages 3-14 can enter in their cinematic masterpieces for over 10,000 people to see. Film work includes work from kids from 20-25 U.S. cities, including animation, short and feature length films, and hands-on workshops at the film festival. Over 175 films will be shown with over 44 countries representing work. Anticipated events includes cat-centered animations, a Q and A from filmmakers around the world and Rainbow Roar, and a shorts program dedicated to celebrating LGBTQ youth. 2. Wine in the Market. Pike Place Market Love Tasting Experience. Pike Place Market. 11 a.m.- 4 p.m. on Feb. 29. Spend your Leap Year “bonus” day by sipping tasty wines brought in from around the region, paired with delicious indi chocolates and treats. Tickets include 12 wine tasting pairs from four different Pikes Place Market locations to choose from. Sample Made in Washington wines with a Seabear SmokeHouse tasting flight and delicious Beechers crackers, cheese and smoked salmon. 3. Curious about the environment. Climate Change Curiosity Expo. Feb. 28-Mar. 1. Pacific Science Center. During the all-day experience, get hands-on with local science experts about climate change and its affect on the earth. Learn about worldly issues about climates change and melting ice caps, to hurricane intensity and extreme temperature fluctuation. Participants will get to map out their transportation emissions with Cascade Bicycle Club, build indoor air fan filters and learn about plastic pollutants with the Duwamish Valley Youth Crops. If you love tech, try out scientific video games about climate change. This event is a partnership between PacSci and University of Washington Polar Science Center and Applied Physics Laboratory. 4. Craft brewers. Washington Beer Open House. Cairn Brewing, Kenmore. Noon- 4 p.m on Feb. 29. Join the Washington Beer Commission and meet over 120 Washington state brewers as they present their best craft beers for beer lovers to try. Participants can taste brews from many local Washington breweries, and included with this year’s tastings, savory food pairings and unique surprises including souvenirs at the event to purchase. 5. International films. Nordic Lights Film Festival. SIFF Cinema Uptown. Feb. 28-Mar. 1. The Seattle International Film Festival presents a weekend-long experience for film-enthusiast who love Nordic cinema and those looking to see works of art from many Scandinavian countries. In theaters this weekend, check-out the opening night presentation from Iceland, “The County”. Also available films to see, “Sticks and Stones” (Denmark), “Karajuku” (Norway) and “Agnes Joy” (Iceland). 6. Seattle dance. Seattle International Dance Festival Winter Mini Fest. Feb. 21-29. Various show and performance times. Erikson Theatre off Broadway, Seattle. SIDF Winter Mini Fest is welcoming their two weekend-long festival back, with highlights of Seattle’s most talented and collaborative collection of international artistic directors, dancers and dance companies. Khambatta Dance Company and Unplugged Bodies, based in Seoul, South Korea, will introduce work from their companies. Dancers will come together to present new pieces of art through the two weekends, with separate weekend passes available. 7. Children’s theatre. Seattle Children’s Theatre presents “Snow White”. Charlotte Martin Theatre. Feb. 29-Mar.1, 7-8, 14-15. Various show times. The classic fairy tale tells the story of two teenagers finding each other deep in the forest, where they must encounter an evil queen. During her journey Snow White befriends seven dwarfs and redefines her true ambitions in life.
