Seattle Public Schools pushes back start date to Sept. 4

SEATTLE — The state’s largest school district is pushing back the first day of class.

Seattle Public Schools and its teachers’ union reached a tentative agreement on a professional development plan for the upcoming school year.

SPS says it will start classes 2 days late this year on Friday, Sept. 4. The Seattle School Board still needs to approve the new start date.

The district announced this will give educators six days of training “on common learning platforms, culturally responsive instruction in a remote setting, racial equity, and best practices in remote instruction to ensure students have the best education possible.”

The first day of preschool and kindergarten will not change and will begin Tuesday, Sept. 8.

Seattle Public Schools students will start the 2020-21 school year with remote learning.

The district will continue remote learning until the risk of COVID-19 transmission has decreased enough to resume in-person instruction.
