Most Expensive Rosary

Spring flowers, chocolate bunnies and pastels all around can only mean one thing, Easter is upon us and while we have long heeded the warnings from our parents to "rest our heads or the Easter bunny will not deliver our baskets!", there are greater significance and meaning to the holiday than a bunny delivering treats. For some that greater meaning includes the use of prayer beads, or for all intents and purposes for this blog, a rosary.

While today there are many rosaries crafted that are of exceptional value, one of the most notable when it comes to beauty and price tag is a 17th-century German rosary comprised of emeralds, diamonds and enamel. The item can be traced back to the Saxon Royal Family during the late 17th century, making it a significant piece of European history.

The rosary, 17 inches in length, consisting of 70 emeralds, spaced by gold rondelles with embedded diamonds was placed for auction at Sothebys in 2012. The estimated value was set between $150,000-$250,000 and opened as such when the auction began. Not surprisingly, the green beauty sold for $842,500, more than triple the amount of the high-end estimate, making this historic item the most expensive and valuable rosary to date.

Though it may lack the current traditional idea of what a rosary should look like, it certainly does contain a classic appeal and provides more than enough to be an eye catcher.
