The Twitter love worked! Glen Powell will be in 'Top Gun: Maverick' after all

All publicity is good publicity, especially if you're Glen Powell.

Fans on Twitter threw a fit when the "Set It Up" star was passed over to play Goose's son in the upcoming "Top Gun" sequel, "Top Gun: Maverick." (Miles Teller got the job instead.)

"I'm taking down all the Tom Cruise posters in my bedroom. Maybe, I'll leave one. Two for symmetry. Okay, the posters are staying," Powell joked after the news broke.

But there was a silver lining for the actor, who memorably starred as astronaut John Glenn in 2016's "Hidden Figures": He's getting a part in "Top Gun 2" anyway.

Powell is in negotiations to join the film, Paramount confirmed to USA TODAY on Wednesday.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, which broke the news, the testing process for Goose's son had Powell and Teller fly to Tom Cruise's home in Clearwater, Florida. Cruise was among producers so impressed with Powell they decided to beef up another role for him.

What else do we know about "Top Gun: Maverick"? A lot, actually. Jennifer Connelly is joining the cast, and Cruise has already filmed scenes in San Diego for his return to the beloved Maverick character. Main filming will resume in September.
