12th Man coming through on Seahawks license plates

The Seahawks specialty license plates have been available to Washington drivers for just more than a week and they’ve already sold thousands – more than some specialty plates that have been available for years.

There were 3,882 plates issued by mid-morning Thursday, according to the Washington Department of Licensing. On the list of the state's 38 available specialty plates, the Seahawks plate total is already ninth when counting registered vehicles on the road.

The Washington State University plate is the most popular with 18,138 on the road now, though variations of those plates have been available for several years. The University of Washington special license plate, which had its first variation available in January 1996, was third among active specialty plates with 7,659.

Law enforcement memorial plates are the second most popular specialty plate on Washington roads with 9,042 plates. Armed forced plates in general were among the most popular of the state's 38 special license plates on the road.

There are 4,336 Army specialty plates on Washington roads now, 2,692 for Marines, 2,656 for the Navy and 2,191 for the Air Force. There are 603 Coast Guard specialty license plates on the road.

As of Jan. 1, there were 754 specialty plates for Western Washington University on the roads.

The least popular? The Evergreen State College specialty license plate. It was first offered in June 1997, there are only 129 on the road now, according to the Department of Licensing.

The specialty plate for 4-H, the youth development group, also have only 129 on active vehicles. Those plates were first available last January.

The Gold Star Parent plate, first issued in January 2009, is the third least popular on active vehicles with 182 and the State Flower plate is the fourth least popular with 233 issued since last January.

Editor's note: This story has been updated. The Department of Licensing clarified Friday that their speciality license plate report included only plates currently registered to vehicles that are “on the road.”
