2 more school zone speed cameras in place in Kent

KENT, Wash. — The Kent School District now has two more school zone speeding cameras in place as school begins Monday.

It brings the number of schools in the district with the cameras up to four.

The latest are on 140th Avenue Southeast and Southeast 270th Street outside Meridian Elementary and Millennium Elementary schools in Kent.

Though tickets won’t be issued from the two new cameras until a month-long warning period is over, fines from cameras at Sunrise and Neely-O'Brien will start Monday.

Drivers caught speeding even a mile over the limit will be issued a $124 ticket.  Drivers traveling 10 or more miles over the limit will be fined $248.

During a previous warning period, 1,800 notices were mailed out. If drivers had instead been charged the base rate of $124, the city of Kent would have made $225,000.

Some parents think the cameras outside the schools are speed traps and money makers, while others support them.
