91-year-old victim of Everett gas station attack dies

EVERETT, Wash. — A 91-year-old man who was attacked at an Everett gas station died Thursday evening, just a week after police arrested a suspect, according to  Aaron Snell of the Everett Police Department.

Harold Caywood was walking to pay for his gas at an ARCO station at 9931 19th Avenue South on Aug. 24.

Police said 26-year-old Patrick Hartness allegedly assaulted Caywood by striking him multiple times in the head, face and body and then took his wallet. Caywood was then taken to Providence Medical Center for treatment of facial injuries.

Hartness fled the scene, but was taken into custody and booked at the Snohomish County Jail for the assault and outstanding warrants.

It is unknown at this time if Caywood’s death was a result of the attack or of natural causes, according to Snell.

An autopsy will be performed by the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death.

Hartness is still in custody for the robbery charge.

Police believe that there are additional elderly victims who have not reported burglaries or may not realize they were victims.

The Everett Police Department is encouraging anyone with information about the burglaries to call their tip line at 425-257-8450.
