The harbor seal pups born earlier this month at Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium can now be viewed by the public.
One of the zoo’s harbor seal, Shila, gave birth to a 23-pound male pup on June 2. Another seal, Qilak, gave birth to a female pup on June 10.
The mothers and pups have been living behind the scenes in the Rocky Shores area of the zoo as the pups nursed and gained weight. Both have been swimming well.
Zoo staff said the harbor seals can take naps on land or just below the water surface, coming up to breathe every five to 10 minutes, all without completely waking up.
