TACOMA, Wash. — The body of a 50-year-old Portland, Oregon, novice scuba diver missing after a Tacoma, Washington, diving excursion has been located and is being tested to see whether health or equipment problems contributed to her death.

Tacoma police spokeswoman Loretta Cool says two women on shore last Wednesday saw what they described as a diver in distress, bobbing above the water and screaming for help. A water and air search failed to locate Candace Sneed, a mother of three.

The Oregonian reports that another diver spotted the dead diver's body last weekend in Tacoma's Commencement Bay. Cool says the medical examiner will release the cause of death.

The newspaper reports that Sneed and her 12-year-old son were on their first open dive since getting certified. They were preparing for a dive vacation to Fiji.
