PALMDALE, Calif — Sheriff's deputies detained a 14-year-old boy Friday after a reported shooting at Highland High School in Palmdale, California, left one of his classmates injured.
Neither the suspect nor the injured person were identified.

Update 2:09 p.m. EDT May 11: Authorities detained a 14-year-old boy Friday after deputies said he shot one of his classmates at Highland High School.
Sheriff's deputies said authorities responded within minutes of getting reports, just after 7 a.m., of an armed man at the school. A 14-year-old boy suffered a gunshot wound to his arm, but a sheriff's department spokesman said at a news conference Friday that he was expected to make a full recovery.
Deputies apprehended the suspect, whose name was not released, off-campus. A rifle was also recovered.

"I had all the kids run," teacher Elizabeth Cramer told KNBC, adding that she will never forget the fear she saw in her students' faces. "I think that's what's going to get to me. It was real fear."
History teacher Garret Root told KNBC that he saw students running as he was walking to school. They told him that there was a shooter on campus.
"At first, I didn't believe them, but then I heard a gunshot," Root told KNBC. "I looked and saw, it looked like a boy carrying what looked like a long gun. Within seconds, all the kids were in classrooms or off campus."

Officials continue to investigate.
Update 11:45 a.m. EDT May 11: Sheriff's deputies said a search of Manzanita Elementary School, where a separate shooting was reported Friday morning, turned up no evidence of an incident on-campus.
Deputies cleared the school before 8:45 a.m. local time Friday.

Authorities did not immediately confirm reports of shots fired at the school.
Deputies were also responding Friday morning to reports of shots fired near Manzanita Elementary School, about seven miles away from Highland High School, authorities said. Officials did not elaborate on the situation.
Update 11:10 a.m. EDT May 11: Los Angeles County Fire Department supervisor Art Marrujo told KTLA that one person went to a hospital Friday morning with a possible gunshot wound after reports surfaced of a shooting at Highland High School.
The person took him or herself to the hospital, Marrujo said.
Officials have not confirmed that a shooting took place, although authorities told KTTV that deputies had confirmed that an armed man was on campus Friday morning.

Original report: A spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s department told KGO-TV that officials could not immediately confirm shots had been fired at Highland High School in Palmdale. Reports first surfaced of an incident on campus just after 7 a.m. local time.
Palmdale is about 60 miles north of Los Angeles.
