SEATTLE — Transportation officials are investigating after an alarm tripped the closure lights at Seattle's Battery Street Tunnel Friday morning, causing confusion for drivers.
The closure lights began flashing at about 5:30 a.m. The Seattle Department of Transportation did not immediately know what caused the lights to activate, but later said an alarm tripped.
Lights on both sides of signs that say "Tunnel closed when flashing," activate during tunnel closures, but the tunnel was actually open.
Officials are investigating what caused the alarm to go off.
Some confused drivers approached the tunnel, stopped, then backed up to take a detour. Others used the tunnel as normal.
The tunnel lights were shut off at about 6:10 a.m.
