MAPLE VALLEY, Washington — A 15-year-old girl lied to police when she said she was attacked and sexually assaulted by two men on the Lake Wilderness Trail near Maple Valley last week, the King County Sheriff's Office said.
Detectives said the girl's story didn't match up with evidence found during the investigation. The specifics of that evidence weren't revealed, but police said when the girl was presented with detectives' findings, she admitted she lied.
"While it is unfortunate that the false report created anxiety and a great deal of work for our deputies, we are pleased that there is closure for the community and that the student finally did do the right thing," King County Sheriff Steve Strachan said.
Detectives didn't say why the girl made the story up, but said they are working with prosecutors, who will decide if the girl will face charges for the false report.
