Darrington mayor to be honored at White House

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Mayor of Darrington will be honored at The White House for his actions after the Oso mudslide Friday.

The U.S. Small Business Administration is recognizing Darrington Mayor Dan Rankin with a Phoenix Award.

The administration gives out the awards to a business owner, public official and volunteer who help communities recover from natural disasters.

Mayor Rankin is being recognized for “selflessness and tenacity.”

The Oso Mudslide killed 43 people in March 2014 and buried State Route 530, which connects Oso to Darrington. Rankin helped coordinate a search and rescue mission and fought to restore phone and Internet service after the landslide.

The cities of Darrington and Arlington also worked together in the aftermath to help the survivors get back on their feet.
