DOD: JBLM soldier dies from injuries after Afghanistan attack

JOINT BASE LEWIS-McCHORD, Wash. — A Joint Base Lewis-McChord soldier died from his injuries Thursday after his unit was attacked with an improvised explosive device, said officials with the Department of Defense.

Staff Sgt. Nicholas J. Reid, 26, died in Landstuhl, Germany from wounds suffered on a Dec. 9, in Sperwan Village, Afghanistan, when enemy forces attacked his unit.

Officials said Reid was assigned to JBLM in April 2008, and upon arrival he was assigned to 53rd Ordnance Company (EOD), 3rd Ordnance Battalion (EOD). The unit deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in September 2012.

This was his second deployment.

Reid was originally from Rochester, N.Y.
