The old building contains asbestos, which makes the job more complicated for contractors.
The city says the contractor was asked to make a reasonable effort to salvage and clean asbestos from any personal effects left in the building.
The section of 102nd Avenue Northeast that is currently closed just north of the 102nd Avenue Bridge may reopen as early as Wednesday.
The building and associated debris may be removed as soon as Friday.
Flames destroyed fifteen businesses and damaged five more on July 22.
The fire started in the old mercantile building, which was under construction. It then jumped across the street and destroyed the Bothell Mall, which held fifteen businesses.
Investigators from the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are still working to determine how the fire started.
