This year, Evergreen High School is doing Homecoming a little differently.
Evergreen’s superintendent and athletic director will address the crowd at Friday night’s football game, remarking on the tragic loss of Kenney Bui.
The school will accept donations inside the gate for the new Kenney Bui Memorial Scholarship.
The scholarship was created as a co-effort between the Highline Schools Foundation for Excellence and the Bui family to honor Bui’s memory.
Bands and cheerleaders from other Highline Public Schools will also attend the game. They will perform as a show of support for the Evergreen community.
This will be the first football game the team has played following Bui’s death on Oct 5.
Bui – a 17-year-old Seattle native – was entering his senior year at Evergreen High School.
He was critically injured while playing in a football game for Evergreen on Oct 2. He died due to head-related trauma.
Funds raised for the scholarship will be presented at Highline’s Scholar-Athlete, Coach and Community Recognition Banquet to be held next spring.
The Scholar-Athlete program awards college scholarships to outstanding multi-sport athletes who have shown exemplary efforts athletically, academically and in community service.
A memorial scholarship will be awarded to a graduating scholar-athlete in Kenney's name next spring.
Contributions to the Kenney Bui Memorial Scholarship may also be made through the Highline Schools Foundation website.
A GoFundMe page was created to raise money for Kenney’s family to help pay for his medical bills, funeral and other expenses. As of Monday, it had raised more than $10,500.
