SEATTLE — Fighter jets may fly over Seattle, the Puget Sound and the Washington coast on Tuesday, part of an exercise by the North American Aerospace Defense Command.
NORAD said the flights are part of an exercise that includes other parts of the country. People may see fighter jets intercepting and escorting other planes.
"Those in the vicinity … may hear and/or see NORAD-controlled fighter jets in close proximity to a military or military contracted aircraft, which will be taking on the role of tracks of interest," NORAD said on its website.
NORAD said it always conducts tests with different scenarios, "including airspace restriction violations, hijackings and responding to unknown aircraft. All NORAD exercises are carefully planned and closely controlled."
In August 2010, two F-15 fighter jet scrambled from Portland to the Seattle area when a small plane intruded into Seattle air space restricted during President Obama's visit.
