Fire burns duplex, barber shop in Shoreline

SHORELINE, Wash. — A broken fire hydrant slowed down firefighters who were trying to extinguish a fire burning through apartments and businesses in Shoreline.

The fire on Aurora Avenue North near North 175th Street broke out shortly after midnight Thursday.

Firefighters said the fire started in a duplex that’s attached to a barber shop and a printing business. When crews arrived, the duplex was fully involved in flames.

Everyone got out safely, but firefighters had a difficult time getting the flames out because the nearest fire hydrant wouldn't work after was hit by a car a few days ago.

The fire appeared to have gutted the duplex and damaged the barber shop. The flames did not reach the print shop, but it has smoke damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but appears to be accidental.
