H. Ross Perot, the self-made Texas billionaire who twice ran for president, has died, a family spokesman told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

He was 89.

The Dallas Morning News reported Perot died after a five-month battle with leukemia. Family members told the newspaper he was diagnosed in February and that a subsequent, secondary infection in March "nearly killed him."

Still, the founder of Electronic Data Systems Corp. and Perot Systems Corp. continued to make appearances at the office, according to the Morning News.

His son, Ross Perot Jr., told the newspaper his father was "obviously a great family man, (a) wonderful father. But at the end of the day, he was a wonderful humanitarian."

"Every day came to work trying to figure out how he could help somebody," the younger Perot told the Morning News.
