Stolen garbage truck crashes into second garbage truck on Capitol Hill

SEATTLE — A stolen garbage truck crashed head-on into a second garbage truck on Capitol Hill in Seattle Tuesday morning.

Seattle police said that shortly after after 6 a.m., the desk clerk for the East precinct was approached by the driver of a garbage truck.

The driver said he was trying to pick up trash from an alley in the 1500 block of Pine Street when a man came up to him and began harassing him.

The man eventually got into the driver's seat of the running garbage truck and began to drive away.

Police spotted the truck on the Pike-Pine corridor and followed closely as it weaved in and out of traffic.

The driver hit several parked cars and upended a Pronto bike sharing  kiosk at Bellevue Avenue and Pike Street, destroying multiple bikes before crashing into another garbage truck at Bellevue Avenue and East Olive Way.

The stolen truck, a blue Republic Services truck, crashed into a second truck, a green CleanScapes truck, head-on.

Video from the scene showed the blue truck's fuel tank was damaged and partially torn from the truck.

Police said the driver, an 18-year-old with only a learner's permit, was booked into the King County Jail for investigation of auto theft and malicious mischief.

No injuries were reported.
