Hood Canal Bridge to close Friday, could delay traffic for up to 3 hours

The Hood Canal Bridge is a floating bridge located that carries drivers on State Route 104, connecting the Olympic and Kitsap Peninsulas. It is 7,869 feet and was opened in 1961.

Drivers should plan ahead Friday for a scheduled closure on the State Route 104 Hood Canal Bridge.

Crews are closing the bridge to traffic for a marine opening at 2:45 p.m. and it could delay traffic for up to three hours.

Officials with the Washington State Department of Transportation said Friday’s strong tides could prevent the drawspan from closing until slack tide at about 5:30 p.m.

Transportation officials said the opening of the drawspan coincides with anticipated high tides, creating a similar circumstance that led to Wednesday's extended six-hour closure.

Officials said the potential for extended drawspan openings is the result of three converging factors: a disengaged anchor cable near the drawspan that is being replaced; a marine opening; and high tides.

Crews estimate the new anchor cable will be installed and tensioned by noon Sunday, Sept. 13.
