Island County Sheriff names new Jail Chief

Keaton Farris died of dehydration in April.

Island County, Wash. — Island County Sheriff Mark Brown announced today the appointment of a new Jail Chief.

Jose Briones will step into the position on December 7.

“With Jose's 14 years of correction experience, including extensive work with inmates with mental illness, he will bring the right approach and expertise to our jail," Brown said.

Briones is currently a Correctional Captain at the Monroe Correctional Complex. He is assigned as the Captain of the Special Offenders and Intensive Management Unit.

Back in June, Brown issued an apology following the death of 25-year-old Keaton Farris, who was found dead in his jail cell on April 8.

He died of dehydration and malnutrition after water was shut off in his jail cell. Read the story here.

In a report more than 60 pages long, the sheriff apologized for a breakdown in “policies, procedures and communication” that led to Farris’ tragic death.

The report determined that Farris died after jail staff falsified records of checking on him in his cell, hours before his death.

Interim Chief Chris Garden has been in charge of the Island County jail staff for the past several months.
