Kennewick mammoth dig leads to other discoveries

KENNEWICK, Wash. — A mammoth discovery in Kennewick has unearthed a number of other surprises.

The Tri-City Herald provided pictures of the dig at Coyote Canyon.

They say researchers working to excavate more than 70 mammoth bones also stumbled upon the remains of snakes, lizards, ground squirrels and possibly a camel.

Researchers say the remains of the small burrowing animals suggest the region went through a hot period about 9,000 years ago when the animals dug deep to escape the heat.

Researchers have dug through more than 11 feet of dirt.
