KENT, Wash. — After 99 years of service, the deteriorating Alvord "T" Bridge in Kent is closing Wednesday.
The bridge is one of the most deficient bridges in the state.
It had been slated to close later this month, but the closure got moved up after observations from staff that oversize load restrictions were being ignored.
The bridge's main supports are severely rusted and it cannot carry heavy loads. It also has narrow lanes and low overhead clearance.
About 2,500 vehicles cross the Green River daily, but King County doesn't plan on replacing it because there are several alternate routes.
The bridge will be demolished at the end of the summer.
