LACEY, Wash. — It seems a daunting prospect, climbing up onto the roof of the KFC to break in. But Lacey Police say that is exactly what someone did last night using a Sawzall.
Lacey police have photos showing the handiwork of a brazen burglar.
Whoever broke in cut a hole into the rubberized roof, past the insulation and out through the sheet rock ceiling of the KFC. It happened over night on busy Lacey Boulevard.
"Went straight to the office space of KFC," said Lacey Police Detective Jonathan Mason. The burglar then went looking for the restaurant's loot.
"They located two safes that were broken into and the burglars made away with an undisclosed amount of money," said Mason.
The burglary was discovered at about 5:30 Tuesday morning by a worker delivering the day's supplies.
"Bizarre, it was really bizarre," said customer Richard Nichols, an architect. "Cutting through a roof, you know, you're never really sure what kind of structure you're going to cut into. I mean what if the guy missed the hole?"
Customer Ken Norgaard, of Lacey, doubted they got away with a lot.
"If they're like most fast food or even small grocery stores, corner markets," said Norgaard. "They make a deposit everyday which means there's not any cash in the safe to speak of."
In fact, Lacey police say the crook didn't get much money for all that trouble.
He did leave the blade of his Sawzall behind.
But police need help catching him.
Anyone with information about the burglary is asked to call police.
