RENTON, Wash. — Firefighters are working to determine what caused a fire at an apartment building in downtown Renton, where a person died Tuesday night.

Firefighters were called at 8:45 p.m. to Spencer Court apartments on Wells Avenue South, where smoke could be seen coming out of an open window on the third floor.

Crews said the person who died was found outside the building underneath an open window. Medics performed lifesaving measures but the victim died at the scene, firefighters said.

It’s unclear how the victim died.

Firefighters were able to put out the fire, which was contained to one unit. Other units were damaged by smoke and water.

“The building (has sprinklers) and without a doubt it did control the fire in that unit of origin. It absolutely controlled it,” said King County Fire Zone 3 public information officer Jay Wittwer.

The investigation is ongoing.
