MERCER ISLAND, Wash. — One person died and another was injured after a truck struck a power pole on Wednesday night on Mercer Island.

Police and firefighters were called to the 7000 block of North Mercer Way for a report of an accident.

When officers arrived, they encountered a truck that had hit a power pole.

A man and a woman were in the truck.

Police said the man and woman were a married couple from Renton.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and the man was taken to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition.

A medical examiner determined the woman’s cause of death to be a single gunshot wound to the head at close range.

During the incident, police said Puget Sound Energy was called to disconnect electricity lines to allow for a safe response.

Also, witnesses told police they heard what sounded like gunshots at the time of the crash. Law enforcement said a gun was found in the truck.

There was no threat to the public.

Police said 48 homes lost power due to the crash.

Around 4 a.m. Thursday, power was restored to homes that had lost it and the roadway was reopened.

The investigation is ongoing.
