10-year-old Issaquah girl drowns in irrigation pond

GEORGE, Wash. — A 10-year-old Issaquah girl drowned Monday in an Eastern Washington irrigation pond, officials said.

The girl was vacationing with her family in George, Washington near the 300 block of Silica Road Northwest.

She slipped under the surface of the 3-acre pond when playing with the other kids, sheriff’s officials said.

Sheriff’s deputies, Grant County fire officials and family members searched the pond starting around 8:30 p.m.

Firefighters jumped into the pond and searched for over an hour without finding the girl.

Officials suspected the girl may have been drawn into the pond’s siphon pipe. Firefighters dissembled a joint on the pipe and found the girl’s body inside around 10:45 p.m.

A coroner will conduct an autopsy, but the early indication is that this was an accidental death, officials said.
