20,000 PSE customers lose power on Whidbey Island

CLINTON, Wash. — According to Puget Sound Energy, an estimated 30,000 costumers lost power Monday. Twenty thousand of those customers were on Whidbey Island.

Bob and Debbie Campbell from Clinton tell KIRO 7 that the lights started to flicker around 7 a.m.

“We’re driving to the ferry and the stoplights were totally blacked out,” said Bob.

Crews were spotted from Langley to Coupeville working to restore power.

Clarence Hein has lived on island for the past 16 years. From his porch overlooking Saratoga Passage, he watched as the winds picked up.

Hein recalls seeing whitecaps on the waves around 7 p.m. Sunday.

“The waves were pretty big last night, even at 10:00 when the power went out and it just kept getting stronger and stronger. Then it’d lighten up. Then it’d come back with a vengeance,” said Hein.
