54 years ago today, the Seattle Monorail was dedicated.

“The evening began with a gourmet supper at the Olympic Hotel,” The Seattle Times reported the following day. “Then the guests gathered at the Westlake Mall to christen the two shiny new monorail trains.”

Mrs. Sixten Holmquist, wife of the Alweg Inc. president who sponsored the monorail for the 1962 World’s Fair, shattered a bottle of champagne on her second attempt.
