It’s that time of year again! Spring is here and that means tulip season is back in Skagit County!

Since the weather has been cold lately, tulip grower Brent Roozen with RoozenGaarde says the tulips are in peak bloom for the next 10 days.

“We’re looking at the latest bloom we’ve had in the history of growing tulips. Right now, we’re at the end of April. We’re anticipating a weeks worth of blooms into May over the next 10 days. We’re going to have the most color we’ve ever had,” Roozen said.

There are over 200 different varieties of tulips in the RoozenGaarde fields. Pinks and yellows are the most popular at the moment, but it all depends on what’s blooming that day. Since it’s been a late bloom, the bloom has progressed significantly with no sign of slowing down just yet.

“We are going to bloom into May, so don’t think just because we’re going into May the tulips are going to disappear. We’re going to have just as much color on May 1st as we do on April 30th,” Roozen said. “We expect a lot of color through the first weekend of May and after that, it’s TBD to see how much color can keep blooming.”

Roozen says they see crowds from all over the country visit RoozenGaarde this time of year. He suggests coming on weekdays instead of the weekend and earlier in the morning or later in the day to avoid large crowds.

“We put in tens of thousands of hours in this garden, so putting something together and seeing the final piece come together it’s pretty satisfying and seeing the reaction and the look on everyone’s faces - it’s pretty cool to see,” Roozen said.
