Prosecutors charge man for promoting street racing event where two spectators died

AUBURN, Wash. — A street racing crackdown has led to a first-of-its kind prosecution against a man police say promoted a “drifting” event in Auburn where two spectators were killed.

In November 2020, detectives say a driver who was “swinging” in a car near some Auburn warehouses lost control, killing two spectators and injuring a third.

“This was nothing but a reckless driving festival,” said King County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Satterberg.

The man police say was driving, Rondale W. Hendricks, is charged with two counts of vehicular homicide.

On Tuesday, King County prosecutors charged the man they say promoted the event, Jerrick Judd, with two counts of accomplice to vehicular homicide.

“We want people to understand that promoting illegal racing makes you just as complicit as participating in the racing,” Satterberg said.

A regional street racing task force has referred information to prosecutors about 69 people for involvement in events like intersection takeovers.

The task force formed last spring after a rise in incidents around the region.
