VAUGHN, Wash. — A 25-year-old man was arrested in Pierce County Monday after deputies say he hit an 80-year-old man in the head with a hammer multiple times early in the morning.
Deputies said they responded to a 911 call about the assault around 1:00 a.m. just north of Vaughn. When they arrived, deputies said the 80-year-old man had deep lacerations on his scalp and found the hammer nearby.

The 80-year-old man was then taken to a nearby hospital.
Witnesses told deputies the suspect ran into woods behind the 80-year-old’s house after the attack and appeared to be under the influence of drugs. Deputies searched the woods, but were unable to find the suspect.
Around 4:45 p.m., deputies said they received a report of a suspicious person walking in the area. They quickly responded to the scene, and found the suspect hiding in bushes.
The suspect was arrested without incident and was booked into the Pierce County Jail on investigation of first-degree assault.
Deputies have not yet provided an update on the victim’s condition.
